Savor the best of California Crema

Available from April to July, look for California Crema at your local market and experience them for yourself!

How can I tell when it’s ripe?

Gently press a California Crema near the stem. A ripe avocado will give slightly to the pressure. California Cremas have a thicker, protective skin, so their exterior may feel slightly firmer when ripe than a Hass avocado. An already soft exterior likely means the fruit is overly ripe.

Selecting the best California Crema

To enjoy now

Choose a dark-skinned avocado that barely gives to gentle pressure near the stem.

To enjoy later

Choose very firm green avocados at your local supermarket and allow them to ripen for 2-5 days at room temperature.

Storing and ripening to perfection

California Crema avocados should be stored at room temperature (68 - 75 degrees F). To ripen:

  • 1 Place unripe, whole avocados in a paper bag.
  • 2 Monitor daily for 2-5 days, gently squeezing from the outside of the bag. Tip: add a banana to the sealed bag to speed up ripening.
  • 3Remove from the bag when the avocados yield to gentle pressure near the stem.
  • 4 Cut, remove the pit, and enjoy!
