A gold-flecked GEM

California Crema is a GEM variety avocado. GEMs are recognizable by their distinct, gold-flecked skin. As the fruit ripens, its skin darkens. It has a taste and texture similar to the Hass variety, but many people say it’s even more flavorful!

Mindfully Grown & Packaged

GEM avocados, like the California Crema, strive to use farming methods that reduce their environmental impact. The fruit grows on compact trees, resulting in higher production per acre, and is more resilient to harsh and changing weather1.

Compostable bags and stickers

California Crema bags at select retailers utilize certified home-compostable cellulose net1 and PLU stickers2 on loose fruit.

FSC-certified Materials

We package and distribute our products in biodegradable, FSC-certified cartons made with 37.5% recycled content.3

Lower-impact operations

Our Direct-to-Print capabilities help streamline the supply chain and remove thousands of pounds of waste per year.

Meet some of the experts behind the harvest

Gray E. Martin

Determined to find a viable alternative to the Hass for California growers, Gray E. Martin and the renowned team at UC Riverside introduced the GEM — in all caps for Martin’s initials — almost 30 years ago. Today, this avocado pioneer continues to share his growing philosophy, advocating for an individualized approach to caring for the GEM tree.

Rob Brokaw

Brokaw Nursery, Ventura, CA

Brokaw Nursery has a long and storied lineage of new variety innovation, dating back to Harold Brokaw, who first propagated the Hass avocado in the 1920s. Today, third-generation grower Rob Brokaw continues this legacy of excellence, continually refining growing techniques to produce strong, healthy GEM avocado trees (among his 300,000+ plants per year) in Ventura County.

Zach Rissel

La Patera Ranch, Goleta, CA

A 7th generation farm dating back to 1872, La Patera Ranch has planted GEM trees since 2016. General Manager Zach Rissel expects a bright future for the GEM, due to its superb quality, higher yields per acre, and potential for increased efficiency and sustainability. He looks forward to celebrating the season as an exclusively California-grown harvest.

The Rogers Family

Hass Dreams Ranch, Valley Center, CA

Acquiring an avocado ranch to call home was the realization of a long-held dream for the Rogers family. They were immediately attracted to the high-density growing characteristics of the GEM tree, and the family soon fell in love with the fruit's size, quality, and taste as well.
